Brian Lee, FAIA, is a Design Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). He received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with Highest Honors from the University of California, Berkeley in 1976 and his Master of Architecture with Commendation from Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1978. After practicing in the SOM San Francisco office for 28 years, he joined the Chicago office in 2007.
Brian has lectured, taught, and participated in studio reviews or Dean’s committees at Harvard, UC Berkeley, Stanford, California College of Arts, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Virginia Tech, and TU Delft; served on AIA, Athenaeum, Marcus Prize, and Spark juries; and has been published worldwide. Meng Jianmin graduated with a Ph. D. degree, is a Professor, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a National Engineering Survey and Design Master, and the winner of the 7th Liang Sicheng Architecture Award, is given the special allowance from the State Council. He is the Chairman and Chief Architect of Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research Co. Ltd., also the Director of the Benyuan Design and Research Center of Shenzhen University. He has long been engaged in the creative practices and the theoretical researches in the fields of medical and nursing buildings; future city and future architecture; health, green, and sustainable architecture; new materials, new technologies, and new crafts; urban renewal and smart city, as well as environmental accessibility. In 1999, LIU Xiaodu co-founded URBANUS with partners MENG Yan and WANG Hui making it one of the most influential architectural practices in China. He is often invited to be one of the jury members for a number of international competitions and to give lectures at many influential academic institutions worldwide.
Bruce Lindsey, the E. Desmond Lee Professor for Community Collaboration, served as dean of the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis from 2006-2017.
As a teacher and administrator, Lindsey has made significant contributions to beginning design education, sustainable design education, and community design education. As dean he helped launch a new Master of Landscape Architecture program — the first such program in the state of Missouri, helped launch a new doctoral program in sustainable urbanism — the first of its kind in the US. Lindsey received a distinguished professor award from the ACSA (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture,) served as president of ACSA 2016/17, and is currently serving a year as past president.
From 2001-2006 Lindsey served as head of Auburn’s School of Architecture in Auburn, Alabama. Prior to moving to Alabama, Lindsey was a member of the faculty in the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University from 1987-2001. He served as associate head of the School of Architecture from 1994-2001 working closely with head Vivian Loftness to strengthen sustainability as a core value across the curriculum.
Lindsey’s design practice has spanned 30 years. His design of the Pittsburgh Glass Center in 2001 in collaboration with Davis + Gannon Architects is a gold rated building under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Environmental & Energy Design guidelines (LEED). This project was awarded an AIA Design Honor Award and was selected as one of 2005’s top 10 green buildings in the US by the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (COTE). In 1992 his early work in digital aided manufacturing along with colleague Paul Rosenblatt was cited by Engineering News Record magazine as one of the year’s ten who made significant contributions to the construction industry. His book Digital Gehry: Material Resistance Digital Construction published by Birkhauser in 2001 explores the use of technology in the design and delivery process of Frank Gehry’s architectural office. A native of Idaho, Lindsey earned a bachelor’s degree in art in 1976 and a master’s degree in sculpture and photography in 1979, both from the University of Utah. He earned a master’s degree in architecture from Yale University in 1986.
Since 1972, Professor Hartkopf has been teaching and conducting research at Carnegie Mellon University. His work covers a broad range of activities: international initiatives, funded research and professional consulting on building systems integration, advanced technology, building performance, energy conservation, urban revitalization, third-world housing, and disaster prevention. He has realized as an architect building projects in Germany, Bangladesh, Peru, and the United States. He also led master planning efforts for Volkswagen A.G. and the City of Wolfsburg, Germany; EXPO 2000 Hanover and Berlin-Lichtenberg, Germany.
In 1975, Prof. Hartkopf co-initiated and subsequently directed the first multi-disciplinary program in Architecture, Engineering, and Planning in the USA with grants from the National Science Foundation and the building industry. In 1981, he co-founded the Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics (CBPD) at Carnegie Mellon. Between 1981-1985, Prof. Hartkopf developed jointly with Vivian Loftness and Peter A.D. Mill, the Total Building Performance Evaluation Method at Public Works Canada whilst on an Executive Interchange Program. Based on the R & D needs in building performance, Prof. Hartkopf has created and directs the Advanced Building Systems Integration Consortium (ABSIC), comprising leading building industries, six U.S. government agencies, two foreign governmental agencies, and Carnegie Mellon.
Currently, Prof. Hartkopf is leading the Building as Power Plant (BAPP) project. The BAPP has been selected by the US Congress as the National Test-bed for Advanced Technology in Building. The 6,500 m2 project will be realized on the Carnegie Mellon Campus. The BAPP will integrate advanced energy-effective building technologies with innovative energy generation systems, such that all of the buildings energy needs for heating, cooling, ventilating and lighting, as well as equipment are met on-site, maximizing the use of renewable energies. Broader implementation of its concepts in industry and government here and abroad are expected.

Dr. Su Yunsheng is a cross-disciplinary and multi-scale urban innovation expert. Dr. Su has held the position of Innovation Director of Shanghai 2010 World Expo Master Planning and he is also the co-founder of Urban China Magazine.
Dr. Su has directed many important Urban Design projects in China, such as the 2005 Beijing Tongzhou Canal City, 2010 Shanghai Expo-village, and 2013 Guangzhou Financial City to name a few. And also he has led many urban planning projects overseas, such as Angola, Zambia, Russia, etc.
Dr. Su was a speaker at the 2014 TED global, Tencent WE summit, and One person One World -CCTV. Dr. Su is also active in bringing the experience of China’s rapid modernization and designs to other developing countries such as Angola, Zambia, and Russia. Dr. Su has also been invited many times to teach in Shanghai’s and Beijing’s mayor training course.
Zhonggui Zhao is a founding partner of Zephyr (US) Architects P.C. He has been practicing architecture in China and the US for more than 20 years. He has designed a broad range of projects: civic buildings, institutional buildings, mixed-use, and residential developments. Recently completed projects include Donghu National Innovation District Civic Center, which won 2017 National Gold Award for Design Excellence and Green Building Engineering. Prior to starting Zephyr Architects, he worked as an associate at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners in New York. The experience there included public buildings and master planning in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Specific projects include New Seat for Regione Lombardia in Milan, Italy, Center for Government and International Study at Harvard University in Boston, Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City and Beijing CBD Core Master Plan, winner of an international competition. Mr. Zhao received his Master of Architecture degree from Yale University and Bachelor of Architecture from Tsinghua University. He is a registered architect in New York, a member of the American Institute of Architects.
Dr. Hailong Xu is a senior executive with over twenty years of international experience. He has a bachelor degree from University of Science & Technology Beijing, and a Ph.D. from Imperial College London, as well as an MBA from Nyenrode Universiteit in the Netherlands. He has worked for Royal Dutch Shell, GE Capital, Sasol International, and Eldorado Gold Corporation. His experience covers a wide span of business areas, including R&D, technology marketing and sales, large project development, new business development, and government & public relations. In 2016, Dr. Xu joined IBM to lead a new business growth initiative called Green Horizon, which develops solutions for the renewable energy and environmental protection sectors by applying cutting-edge IBM technical capabilities to these industries.
Luke Leung is the firm-wide director of the MEP + Sustainable Engineering Studio for SOM. Leung leads his team in attaining the highest levels of human, environmental, and financial performance. He has won multiple awards, including 13 “Excellence in Engineering” awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), two “Beyond Green” awards from the National Institute of Building Sciences, and multiple sustainable design awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Zhen Yu is the director of the High-Performance Building Research Center of China Academy of Building Research, where he is also the deputy director of Green Building Research and Design Center. He is a fellow of China Green Building Council, a member of the reviewing board of green building certification of Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, a technical board member of the green data center of China Electronics Society. Zhen is a member of Chinese Standardization Committee of Building Energy Saving. In the last 5 years, he has joined several national standard composing boards for passive low energy building, low-carbon building and building energy saving.
Zhen Yu has a Bachelor and Master degree in Building Science from Tsinghua University and a DPhil in Control Systems from the University of Oxford. His expertise is green building, high-performance building, energy efficiency of building, and intelligent control of energy system.

Stephen Lau serves as Deputy Head-Research, Director of following: the ArchPhD Programme, Tropical Technologies Laboratory, and the M.Sc. Integrated Sustainable at the National University of Singapore. He specializes in sustainable building and urban design. He has expertise in architectural acoustics, light and lighting, green building rating and integrated design. He is also PI, Co-PI of other research grants on (2) Urban noise modelling, (3) Biophilia, and (4) Climatic responsive passive design, about SGD400,000; and (5) Director to three research projects of the Tropical Technologies: renewable energies, productive façade and natural ventilation – around SGD 400,000.

Doreen Heng LIU, a Chinese architect born in Guangzhou. She received her MArch from UC Berkeley in 1994 and Doctor of Design at Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2008.
In 2004, Doreen established her own design practice NODE in Nansha and Hong Kong and relocated in Shenzhen since 2009. Ms. Ye Qing, Professor-level Senior Engineer, National Class-A Registered Architect, has been devoted to researches and practices on green building and ecological city development for a long period. She is currently Chairman of Shenzhen Institute of Building Research Co., Ltd. (IBR), as well as Deputy Director of Green Building Expertise Committee of Chinese Society for Urban Studies (CSUS), Deputy Director and Secretary-General of China Eco-City Expertise Committee of CSUS, Member of Standing Committee of the Sixth Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, Chairman of Shenzhen Green Building Association, and other social positions. She was awarded as Global Chinese Young Architect, China Contemporary Top-100 Architect, 2014 National Excellent Science and Technology Researcher.
She works at the frontier of science and technology of construction for a long time; she is good at policy-market-technology joint research and innovate new design methodologies from such research; she advocates for share design and balanced planning, actively implements research outputs, summarizes cases for promoting and practicing; and she is a key contributor to promoting green building and eco-city development in China. Joseph Simon is an Architect and strategic project manager focusing on special event management, creative competition design, targeted resource utilization, and the built environment through sustainable, energy-efficient design, development, construction and analysis. He has a history of supporting innovation across disciplines, including modular housing and renewable energy. Since 2011, he has served as the Competition Manager for all U.S. Solar Decathlon events and supported the event internationally in China, Colombia, and the United Arab Emirates. He actively coordinates technical assistance at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for several dozen DOE-funded solar startups working to reduce the cost of solar and supports management of the Race to Zero student design competition. He coordinates events, communications, and outreach for Go Code Colorado, a challenge hosted by the state asking teams to creatively use public data to solve business challenges. In parallel, he is a co-founder of a company working to develop modular housing solutions for Denver’s entry-level market. He has a Masters of Architecture, Master of Business Administration, and Bachelors of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and serves on the executive board of directors for Levitt Pavilion Denver, operating an open-air amphitheater in Denver’s Ruby Hill park hosting 50 free concerts per year starting in summer 2017.
Martin Bechthold is Director of the Doctor of Design Program, director of the GSD’s Technology Platform, and Associate Faculty at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. He teaches courses in design robotics and material systems, building structures, as well as lifecycle design.
Bechthold received a Diplom-Ingenieur degree in architecture from the Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule in Aachen, Germany, and a Doctor of Design Degree from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. He is a registered architect in Germany and has practiced in London, Paris, and Hamburg. During this period, he was associated with firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Santiago Calatrava, and von Gerkan, Marg & Partner.
Bechthold’s research broadly looks at material and fabrication technology as a catalyst for innovation for design practice. In 2010 he founded the GSD’s Design Robotics Group and recently merged it into the Material Processes and Systems (MaPS) Group, a collaboration of faculty, research associates, and students that pursues sponsored and other research projects. MaPS’s current research focuses on integrating robotic technology into fabrication and construction processes, developing advanced material systems in collaboration with industry partners and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, and understanding problems of lifecycle design in (building) products. Bechthold is the co-author of Structures and Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing as well as the author of Innovative Surface Structures. His latest book is Ceramic Material Systems.
