Talk | Listening to the Voices of the Teachers – Dialogues with Qu Cuisong, leader of Team TJU&TUD

If we say that students are the brave and courageous soldiers on the competition terrain, the teachers are the generals and strategists in the military camp; the former brings SDC vitality and creativity, and the latter brings SDC depth and impact. The teachers guide the students to learn, to conquer the difficulties and to grow together, and they are the act and spirit leaders of the whole team. Therefore, we need to listen to their voices hiding in the deep smooth waters.

Qu Cuisong: master of architecture of Tongji University, PhD of Darmstadt University of Technology. He is now the deputy professor in school of architecture and urban planning of Tongji University, mainly studying architecture structure and materials as well as energy-saving architecture design and planning. He once participated in and directed the energy-saving reconstruction of Wenyuan building in Tongji University, and also took part in the study on the selection standards of urban best practice area of World Expo 2010. Besides, he is also one of the principle members studying ecological system of Chenjiazhen on Chongming Island in Shanghai.

Organizing committee: could you brief your research fruits, successful experience or case share about green architecture and the related areas?

Qu Cuisong: I contribute little in this area. I teach architecture energy-saving and architectural design—a graduate specialized optional course, for which I published a textbook—Building energy-saving technologies and Architectural design in 2016. In 2007, I presided in the the energy-saving reconstruction of Wenyuan building in Tongji University and designed an office building for BASF Shanghai which won LEED gold medal.

Organizing committee: Can you take about the latest development trend about this area?

Qu Cuisong: After about 40 years’ development of solar photoelectricity and photo-thermal technology, the solar technology and products which were relatively expensive before can be put into mass production in architectural projects. And the architectural energy-saving technologies are transferring from saving energy passively to making active productivity. Compared with the passive building which has strict requirements for building shape and external envelope structure, the active building focuses more on the comprehensive assessment on the energy consumption performance of the whole building so as to provide the building more application composition possibilities and the representation space of the building is therefore enlarged.

Organizing committee: Can you tell something about the relationship between a competition work (a single building) and the aggregate building adapting the Chinese market in your opinion?

Qu Congsong: It should start from the general concept. We should promote and popularize the design principle of the competition work and make it capable in the application in aggregate buildings, which can be demonstrated in the flexible arrangement of the space, the air conditioner technology, the selection of the building components, etc.

Organizing committee: Can you brief your opinion about the relationship between the design of solar competition scheme and the development of solar industry?

Qu Cuisong: The design and the industry should be integrated better in our country. We promote industry-university-research integration, but actually what we have done is far from enough, and Germany does better than us in comparison. Darmstadt University of Technology bore the palm twice, which attaches much to the enterprise-university cooperation. On the contrary, it’s relatively difficult for us to find a domestic enterprise to support our ideas of design.

Organizing committee: What do you think of the influence and meaning of SDC to the reform of college education?

Qu Cuisong: SDC is of great importance to the college education reform. SDC integrates industries, universities and research institutes and it is the only one activity up to now that could make it, therefore, we should keep it! Firstly, the domestic university education on green architecture is relatively weak, and this activity can enhance our knowledge on it; secondly, it can’t adapt to the development need that the universities only engage in idle theorizing. And SDC exposed all the weakness and problems of every step from design, construction to organizing every related area and section.

Organizing committee: Could you please send some words to the students in the end?

Qu Cuisong: I’d love to. The winning or losing is not important but the knowledge you get, the coordination relations established and the perception of yourselves during this process. Green architecture is a significant development area which just starts in China and has broad development space. I hope that you could keep trying in this domain and find your own value while contributing to our living environment.
